The best desk lamp for a home office puts enough light on the work without bouncing glare into your eyes or off the screen. Canada’s workplace health and safety agency, CCOHS, gives a useful target: 75 to 300 lux for computer tasks and 200 to 500 lux for reading good-quality print, with more for small or low-contrast work. It also recommends adjustable local lighting with brightness controls as one way to cut glare.
For a wide desk where you switch between screen and paper, start with the BenQ e-Reading Desk Lamp. Choose the BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 to light the desk from the top of your monitor, the OttLite Extended Reach LED Desk Lamp for high-CRI light on a small base, the Humanscale Nova for warm light on video calls, or the Lepro metal architect lamp for a clamp-on light that leaves the desktop clear.

Figures come from each maker’s product or specification page, checked October 9, 2026. Two links go to the exact listing sold by the maker’s own store on Amazon. The other three are labeled Amazon searches: the BenQ e-Reading listing showed a future availability date, Humanscale’s listings were from third-party sellers, and no Lepro listing matched the maker’s model exactly.
How to Choose a Desk Lamp for a Home Office
Match brightness to the task. CCOHS lists 75 to 300 lux for computer tasks, 200 to 500 lux for reading good-quality print, and 500 to 1,000 lux for medium-contrast or small work such as reading pencil handwriting. Lux measures the light falling on a surface, and BenQ states its figures at a set lamp height: 45 cm for the e-Reading and 50 cm for the Halo 2. Lepro does not give a height for its 1,500 lux figure, and OttLite and Humanscale don’t publish lux at all. A dimmable lamp is the practical answer, since you can turn it down for screen work and up for paper.
Check the coverage, not just the peak. A high center figure doesn’t tell you how far the light spreads across a wide desk. BenQ publishes the area each light keeps at 500 lux: 90 cm (35.4 inches) wide for the e-Reading and 85 x 50 cm for the Halo 2. Lepro says its 41 cm head covers up to 100 cm of desk.
Place it to avoid glare. CCOHS recommends adjustable local lighting with brightness controls, positioning fixtures so they are not directly in front of you or overhead, and keeping the immediate work area brighter than its surroundings. Every lamp here adjusts in brightness by its maker’s description.
Weigh CRI only if color matters. CCOHS says color rendering is not an issue in most work situations, though full-spectrum lighting may be needed when color judgment is important. If you match fabric, paint or print colors at your desk, the OttLite’s published CRI of 95+ and the Nova’s 91+ are the clearest figures on this list.
Plan the cord on a standing desk. A desk-base, clamp or monitor-mounted light all ride up and down with the desktop, so the lamp’s cord belongs with the other cables that move. Our guide to preventing cable strain at a standing desk covers how much slack to leave.
1. BenQ e-Reading Desk Lamp: Best for Wide Desks and Mixed Screen and Paper Work
BenQ built the e-Reading around a curved head that it says lights a desk up to 35.4 inches wide. Its spec sheet lists 1,600 lux at the center from a height of 45 cm and a 500 lux coverage width of 90 cm. A built-in ambient light sensor drives two automatic modes: an e-Reading mode that holds 500 lux at 4000K for screen work, and a Paper-Reading mode that puts 1,000 lux directly below at 5700K. You can also set brightness and color temperature yourself between 2700K and 5700K. BenQ says the lamp passed IEEE 1789 flicker testing.
It is a big lamp: BenQ lists 59 x 22 x 62.5 cm, a 4.8 kg net weight and an 18 W maximum draw. A desk clamp is an optional accessory. BenQ’s pages list the color rendering index as both Ra 90 and Ra 95 or higher, so the table leaves the CRI figure out.
2. BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2: Best When Desk Space Is Tight
The ScreenBar Halo 2 sits on top of your monitor, so it uses no desk space at all. BenQ says it keeps 500 lux across a 33.5 x 19.7 inch (85 x 50 cm) area and lists more than 1,000 lux at the center from 50 cm. It adds a rear-facing backlight behind the screen, and color temperature runs from 2700K to 6500K. A wireless controller sets both lights. An ultrasonic sensor lights the bar when you arrive and, by BenQ’s description, may switch it off after five minutes without significant movement.
Fit is the check that matters. BenQ lists compatibility with monitors 0.17 to 2.36 inches (0.43 to 6 cm) thick and curved screens from 1000R to 1800R, and it designed the front edge to clear built-in webcams. The bar runs on USB-C at 5V and up to 3A. If your monitor sits on an arm, our monitor mount guide covers the arm side of the setup.
3. OttLite Extended Reach LED Desk Lamp: Best for Color-Accurate Light on a Small Desk
OttLite publishes a color rendering index of 95+ for the ClearSun LED in the Extended Reach. The lamp stands on a 6.5 inch round base, so it takes little room, and a flexible neck adjusts its height from 9.75 to 27 inches over a 10.5 inch shade. Touch controls on the shade give three brightness levels. OttLite doesn’t publish a lux or Kelvin figure for this lamp and lists no warm or color modes for it, so pick another lamp if you want to change the light’s tone. It comes in black or white.
4. Humanscale Nova: Best for Video Calls
Humanscale designed the Nova with LEDs around the edge of the head feeding a layered light guide, which it says spreads light evenly without hot spots. Humanscale lists a 3000K color temperature, which it pitches for video conferencing, and a CRI of 91 or higher. The Nova comes with a desktop base, clamp mount or wall mount. A passive infrared occupancy sensor detects a person within 1 meter and turns the light off 15 minutes after no one is found. Humanscale rates it at 7 W and backs it with a 10-year warranty.
Humanscale doesn’t publish a lux figure for the Nova. For why front light matters to a basic webcam, see our Logitech Brio 100 review .
5. Lepro Metal Architect LED Desk Lamp with Clamp: Best Clamp-On Lamp
Lepro’s architect lamp clamps to the desk edge instead of standing on it, which frees the surface underneath. Lepro says the metal clamp fits desks up to 5.9 cm (2.32 inches) thick and the gooseneck adjusts from 43 to 61 cm in height with 360-degree rotation. The 41 cm (16.14 inch) head is rated for 1,500 lux at the center and, per Lepro, covers up to 100 cm of desk. It offers five brightness levels and five color temperatures from 2700K to 5700K, remembers its last setting, and runs from an included 12V adapter with a 1.8 m cable. Lepro doesn’t publish a CRI figure. Check your desktop thickness before you buy, and leave the cord enough slack if the desk moves.

FAQ
How bright should a desk lamp be for computer work?
CCOHS, Canada’s workplace health and safety agency, lists 75 to 300 lux for computer tasks, 200 to 500 lux for reading good-quality print and 500 to 1,000 lux for medium-contrast work such as pencil handwriting. A dimmable lamp lets you stay in the right range for each task.
Is a monitor light bar better than a desk lamp?
A light bar such as the BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 takes no desk space, but it only fits monitors within its clamp range (0.17 to 2.36 inches thick for the Halo 2). A wide desk lamp such as the BenQ e-Reading covers more paper; BenQ lists 500 lux across 90 cm (35.4 inches).
Does CRI matter for a home office lamp?
For most work, no. CCOHS says color rendering is not an issue in most work situations, but full-spectrum lighting may be needed when color judgment matters. If you match fabric, paint or print colors at your desk, look for a published CRI, such as the OttLite’s 95+ or the Humanscale Nova’s 91+.
